Glorious Grains: Exploring New Tastes and Nutritional Qualities

  • Newton Community Farm 303 Nahanton Street Newton MA 02459 (map)

It’s time to up your grain game. Learn about one of the most nutritious and satisfying foods on the planet: grains.

During this interactive, experiential workshop you will be invited to move beyond the well-simmered world of rice and quinoa to taste 7 other delicious whole grains. As we do so, we'll discuss the amazing nutritional qualities of whole grains, the benefits of rotating the kind of grains you consume throughout a month, and debunk some popular myths (like “grain brain”).

We'll cover cooking methods and where to purchase grains. You will get tips for using whole grains as the basis for satisfying, nutritious meals, for example, grain bowls, which are deliciously described in The Engine 2 Seven-Day Rescue Diet.

Immediately following the 2-hour workshop you will have the opportunity to make your own grain bowl using your grain of choice. Add a selection of yummy, freshly cooked veggies (some picked from the NCF fields), plus beans, nuts, seeds, and toppings. Enjoy eating your creation in the company of other workshop participants. The grain bowl meal experience is optional. We hope you can stay for it.

This event is being held twice to accommodate different schedules. Please only register for one of the workshops: Thursday, July 16, 4:00–6:00 OR Saturday, July 25, 10:00–12:00.

Workshops will be held at Newton Community Farm, 303 Nahanton Street, Newton 02459

Please park on Winchester Street and meet the instructor on the barn deck.

$10 per person

Limited to 15 participants per workshop.

Bio:

Jeff Baker was a 34 year resident of Newton until moving to Framingham last year. He and his wife, Dede Vittori, were continuous CSA members of Newton Community Farm from its first year of operation until they moved. Jeff began to explore the delicious world of grains when he converted to eating a 100% whole foods plant-based diet in 2013. The Glorious Grains Workshop grew out of an interest to share meal and cooking ideas among the members of the Newton UU Plant-Based Eating Club (which Jeff, Dede, and others founded in 20218).
